Characters of Gaming: Mario's faithful steed, Yoshi

Honoring gaming's greatest characters from the past and present, the Characters of Gaming series takes a different look at the many figure-heads that the world of videogames has to offer.

Mario may be the head honcho in the Mushroom Kingdom, but without his dinosaur mount he wouldn't get around very fast.  Yoshi taught us that feeding a dino five of any random items will result in one fully-grown (and ridable) companion.

Yoshi

Stars In:
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Baby Mario
Yoshi's Story
Yoshi's Island DS
...and appearances in many ensemble titles such as Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros., etc.

Why he made the cut:
Originally created as little more than a beast of burden for the plumber-hero Mario, Yoshi has expanded into a fully fledged character starring in spin-off games of his own since his first appearance in Super Mario World.  Additionally, the dino with a voracious appetite can be found in nearly any game that features a plethora of characters from the Nintendo stable.  Just don't get to close to his tongue around dinner time.  My prediction, Yoshi's hunger will grow out of control to the point that he become too much of a danger to the Mushroom Kingdom and Mario will have to hunt down his beloved friend.
